THE CHURCH IN CHINA
Much has been reported in recent years concerning the millions of Chinese who have become Christians in the past twenty years. It is clear that the nation is experiencing an unprecedented revival. However, we must also recognise that this turning to God has only taken place in some areas, whereas in others the name of Jesus Christ is still unknown.
China still remains one of the biggest challenges for world mission for the Church of Jesus Christ.
China is still the country with the largest number of lost souls in the world.
China still has the largest number of people who have never once heard the name of Jesus Christ.
China is strategically so important given its size and predicted global influence in the future.
REACHING CHINESE HERE IN THE UK ... THE FUTURE GENERATION OF THE WORLD'S NEXT SUPER-POWER
Most overseas students in the UK are Chinese. All major cities and towns have a growing number of Chinese who come to the UK to study or to work.
We have had first-hand experience of the challenges in reaching the Chinese in mainland China, given the security restrictions. This is particularly the case where foreigners are very few and are therefore under continual surveillance and suspicion.
The underground church networks in China have a long-range plan to evangelise the mainland. The growth in the underground church to date has largely been on the eastern coast and some inland provinces, and predominantly amongst the rural Chinese. Their impact has been less significant amongst the more educated Chinese, or among the minority nationalities (with some exceptions).
This is one key area where we can help support the Chinese Church through cross-cultural training (re Chinese minorities) and reaching the more educated, who are and will be the mind moulders and shapers of the future. Right now there is a key window of opportunity that is before us with an increasing number of educated Chinese going abroad for further education or work experience. The educated Chinese need to be reached and influenced. Many that are coming to the UK are not only interested in furthering their academic education; they also want to learn about Christianity. Many who become Christians immediately start to influence their friends and families back in the mainland by sharing what they have found. This is indigenous church planting from outside where there are no restrictions in reaching and training the national believers! They can return to their country, not only to take positions of influence in their companies or in Chinese society, but also in the Kingdom of God!
